When teaching mathematics at Stockton Heath. We intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills. We aim to develop:

  • A positive attitude towards maths and an awareness of the relevance of maths in real world
  • An understanding of mathematics through a process of enquiry and experiment
  • An ability to solve problems and think logically in order to work systematically and accurately
  • An ability to use initiative and work both independently and in cooperation with others
  • An ability to communicate and discuss mathematical concepts
  • Competence and confidence in pupils’ maths knowledge, concepts and skills.
  • An ability to use and apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real life
  • An appreciation of the creative aspects of maths and an awareness of its aesthetic appeal.

Maths Mastery

Pupils are required to explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings. A wide range of mathematical resources are used and pupils are taught to show their workings in a concrete, pictorial and abstract form wherever suitable. They are taught to explain their choice of methods and develop their mathematical reasoning skills.

Underpinned by:

  • All children are expected to succeed and make progress from their stating points.
  • Teachers have high expectations and provide examples of good practice.
  • A vocabulary rich environment
  • Opportunities to identify patterns and connections

The overall intent being that all children secure long-term, deep and adaptable understanding of maths which they can apply in different contexts.
